EMERGENCIES AND URGENT MEDICAL PROBLEMS

Out of Hours and weekend (Mon-Thurs 6pm – 8.30 am and weekends Friday 6pm – Mon 8.30am)

Most medical problems can wait until the next working day. However, if a patient does need urgent medical help, please call

0845 601 8803.

Your call will  be taken by a professional answering service who will take some details. The duty doctor will then call you, either giving telephone advice or advising you to go to your local Out-of-Hours Centre. If necessary, the duty doctor will visit you at home.

Minor Injuries Units are located at Bunnyhill Primary Care Centre, Hylton Lane, Town End Farm, Sunderland, Tel: 0191 519 5800 (open until 8.15pm) and Grindon Lane Primary Care Centre, Grindon Lane, Grindon, Sunderland, Tel: 0191 525 2300 (open 24 hours).

These Units offer treatment to adults and children aged 2 years and over who may be suffering from a minor injury or illness (children under 2 years should be seen by their GP or attend Accident & Emergency when appropriate).  All patients will be assessed by a qualified nurse with expertise in minor illness and minor injury.  The Service aims to see patients within 75 minutes of arrival time. 

Examples of minor injuries/illness that the Units will treat include:

  • Sprains or bruises
  • Wounds
  • Ankle and wrist injuries
  • Burns and scalds
  • Urine problems
  • Rashes
  • Earache
  • Sore throat
  • Stomach problems
